How Does Oral Health Impact Overall Health and Well-being

Posted on 4/10/2023 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
How Does Oral Health Impact Overall Health and Well-beingOral health contributes to an individual's overall health and well-being. Below are examples of how oral health impacts overall health.

Development of Cardiovascular Diseases

Poor oral health that needs attention can lead to the development of cardiovascular disease. If not addressed, bacteria that cause gum diseases may spread throughout the body and get into the bloodstream, leading to plaque clots within the heart arteries.

As a result, this may lead to an increased risk of heart disease and eventually cause a stroke. If you doubt having signs of gum disease, seek dental treatment as quickly as possible to avoid further health problems.

Can Lead to Diabetes

Individuals who have diabetes are at more risk of developing gum disease. If the patient doesn't seek treatment for the gum disease on time, it makes it challenging to control blood sugar levels which eventually may lead to a more advanced level of diabetes. The relationship between gum disease and diabetes makes it hard to manage the oral problem and the disease, thus harming overall health.

Causes Respiratory Infections

When harmful bacteria in the mouth are not addressed and controlled for a long time, they spread to other parts of the body, especially in the lungs, increasing the risk of infections, weakening the immune system, and making the respiratory system vulnerable to attack.

Poor oral health produces painful sensations and discomfort, making speaking, eating, and socially interacting with others challenging. Hence, this can cause depression and anxiety due to social isolation.

However, good oral health improves and maintains an individual's health and well-being. Hence, regular dental hygiene practices, dental checkups, and regular consumption of nutritious diets prevent oral and dental problems such as tooth decay and gum diseases, improving the oral and overall body health system.

In summary, oral health impacts overall well-being and health; hence, seeking the proper dental treatment is necessary. Please consult us at our offices for the best dental treatment and care.
