How Chronic Illnesses Can Impact Oral Health

Posted on 5/8/2023 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
How Chronic Illnesses Can Impact Oral HealthChronic illnesses have a significant impact on oral health in diverse ways. Below are some of the ways the illnesses affect the oral health

Medication

Due to the long-term administration of chronic illness patients, various medications can form a dry mouth, which reduces saliva levels and excretion. Saliva is vital in preventing oral diseases as it helps to remove remaining food particles in the mouth. Also, saliva helps neutralize the acids produced in the mouth by bacteria; hence, without saliva, there is a risk of tooth decay which, if not addressed, can lead to gum disease formation.

Nutritional Deficiency

Certain chronic illnesses weaken the body by affecting how it takes nutrients from foods and nutritious drinks. Due to this, the body's ability to absorb vitamins and minerals becomes difficult, leading to nutritional deficiencies. The limited absorption of nutrients, especially vitamins, calcium, and phosphorus, affects oral health and makes oral health vulnerable to attack by bacteria, eventually weakening the tooth enamel and leading to gum disease and oral infections.

Oral Inflammation

Chronic illnesses cause inflammation of the body, which affects the gum and tissues within the mouth, thus making the mouth susceptible to gum diseases and bacteria attacks. Due to the inflammation, it becomes difficult to do regular oral cleanings such as brushing and flossing.

Inflammation weakens the teeth' gums, and bleeding may occur while brushing or flossing. Thus, most people avoid oral hygiene, and long-term avoidance leads to the accumulation of plaque and bacteria in the mouth, thus increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

In conclusion, chronic illnesses impact oral health significantly; thus, it is essential for those suffering from this illness to seek dental help from dental professionals to manage the effects of the disease.
