What Causes Tooth Stains?

Posted on 6/19/2023 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
What Causes Tooth Stains? You've probably seen adverts for at-home teeth whitening on Facebook or Instagram. Perhaps you've heard about teeth whitening services available at your dentist's office. You've undoubtedly noticed that your teeth aren't as white as you'd like them to be. You probably already know how to "cure" it, but do you know what causes teeth stains?

Causes of Teeth Staining

Foods and drinks with bright hues are more likely to discolor your teeth. Avoid red wine, coffee, and tea, as well as dark sodas. Consumption on a regular basis might discolor your teeth. Even white and green teas can degrade enamel and darken teeth. Mild stains can be observed after braces are removed, but they are created by the manner the teeth were treated while they were on braces. Remember the aforementioned stain-prevention tips and avoid using teeth-whitening solutions when wearing braces to avoid over-whitening your teeth. Surface stains, undersurface stains, and age-related stains are the three types of stains that affect teeth. Teeth whitening can help with all of these issues.

Teeth Whitening To Remove Stains

Your dentist may recommend whitening treatment if you feel your teeth could be whiter. Your dentist will determine your best treatment options based on the condition of your teeth and the cause of the stains. Various teeth whitening products are available that have different results, pros and cons, and pricing. After you've had your teeth cleaned, it's best to start the teeth whitening process by making sure your teeth are cavity-free. The whitening process isn't permanent. If further treatments are needed or if you choose to limit the cause of your stains, you can prolong the effects of whitening and prevent future stains. Teeth whitening done at a dentist's office can cost several hundred dollars, but over-the-counter whitening can cost less than $50.
