I Have A Chipped Tooth, What Can Happen If It Remains That Way?

I Have A Chipped Tooth, What Can Happen If It Remains That Way?A chipped tooth requires treatment, and it could cause intense oral health complications without proper treatment from a qualified dentist. A chipped tooth refers to the breaking off of a piece of one's tooth enamel. The severity depends on the level of the chip. It could be small and hardly noticeable, or medium with minor damages. It can also be a large chip where the tooth nerve is exposed.

Common causes of a chipped tooth include; biting down hard substances like ice, falls, or accidents, grinding teeth when asleep, or even a blow to the face. That being said, here is what could happen when your tooth gets chipped:

Tooth Sensitivity and Pain

The exposure of tooth roots leaves the tooth vulnerable and thusly sensitive. This kind of experience could be painful. In order to reduce this pain and sensitivity, pain relief medication can be effective in the beginning. However, if not well taken care of, it could worsen, calling for more extensive treatment.

Tooth Loss and Infections

Leaving a chipped tooth unattended medically can damage the root. If the tooth root is exposed for long, then it could get infected and in the latter, result in tooth loss. Losing a tooth could mean seeking a tooth implant or bridge. As such, you should see a dentist for root canal therapy to get rid of the infected dental pulp before it worsens.

Care and Treatment of a Chipped Tooth

Dentists advise seeking prompt care for a chip before it grows worse. If it's a case of minor chipping, the dentist may provide veneers to mask the chipping. For a major chipping, dental bonding may be done to rebuild the tooth. Dental bonding uses a tooth-colored composite resin material to reconstruct a damaged tooth. Additionally, if the tooth has chipped off only a small part of the enamel, the dentist can repair it using the tooth-filling procedure.
