Will I Sleep Throughout the IV Sedation Process?

The advent of IV sedation allows you to be relaxed, while the dentist works on your tooth. While IV sedatives may cause "twilight sleep," general anesthetics may make you unconscious.

What is IV Sedation?

Intravenous sedation, or IV sedation dentistry, involves administering an antianxiety medication during dental treatments. When IV sedation is administered through the blood, it induces a calm and comfortable state of mind. By doing this, the patient can have the operation done by the dentist without being too afraid to sit on the dental chair.

How IV Sedation Operates

The dentist will insert a small needle into a vein in your hand or arm. Attached to an intravenous catheter, the needle facilitates the administration of sedatives directly into the bloodstream. It is okay if you are not a big fan of needles! The afflicted area may be covered with numbing cream by the dental specialist. While the hand is sometimes removed once the medicine is provided, other times, the patients may remain connected to the IV during the treatment.

The dental team will also monitor your oxygen levels and pulse constantly to ensure the sedative does not harm you. Aside from this, the dentist will take your blood pressure before and after the treatment. Making arrangements for someone else to drive you home is essential because IV sedation may make you foggy after the procedure.

Is IV Sedation Effective in Putting You to Sleep?

Although IV sedation does not put you to sleep, it may cause "twilight sleep," a semiconscious state. You will be quite at ease and aware of your surroundings. After the sedation wears off, you will not remember anything about the operation.

What Comes Next?

IV sedation is an excellent way to reduce your anxiety during dental operations. You will be deeply relaxed during the entire procedure, even though it does not put you to sleep. After the process is through, you will not recall anything about it! Visit us today or give us a call for such safe methods.
