Which Type of Dental Crown Is Right for Me?

Dental crowns are an amazing piece of dentistry when you consider how many teeth they have saved over the last few decades. They are amazingly versatile and have been used to fix chipped, broken, or cracked teeth, restore discolored teeth, and protect teeth after a dental procedure, such as a root canal. Here are some of the most common types of dental crowns used by dentists in the modern dental era.

Porcelain Over Metal

The most common crowns our dentist uses have been around for several decades. This crown, sometimes called a standard or traditional crown, is a porcelain cover over a metal cap. The porcelain looks and acts much like your natural tooth, while the metal helps protect the tooth from any further damage. Porcelain over metal crowns lasts between 10 to 20 years.

Resin Crowns

If you are looking for a less expensive alternative to the standard crown, you may want to think about resin. Resin crowns are not as shiny as porcelain, but they do the same job as a porcelain crown. Resin crowns are more prone to cracking than traditional crowns. The typical life of a resin crown is between five and ten years.

Porcelain-Only Crowns

Although the standard crown is porcelain over metal, you can get a porcelain-only crown, which lasts a little longer than a resin crown but not as long as the traditional porcelain over metal crowns. Porcelain crowns are excellent for matching the color of your surrounding teeth, which is why some patients prefer them.

Metal Crowns

In the past, crowns were almost exclusively made of metal because metal was durable. Many people wore gold or silver crowns as a sign of status as well. However, because metal is malleable, the crown may lose some shape over time. Metal crowns today are most often made of zirconia, which is extremely durable and can last well over 20 years.
