What's the Difference Between Dmd and Dds?

Posted on 10/15/2024 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
Meeting dentist at Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS in Syracuse, NYHave you ever wondered what the difference is between a DMD and a DDS? You're not alone! Many people are confused by these two titles, even though they both represent dental professionals. While both DMD and DDS graduates are qualified to practice dentistry, there are some key differences between the two degrees.

The History of DMD and DDS

The history of the DMD and DDS degrees dates back to the 19th century. In 1840, the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery awarded the first DMD degree. The DDS degree followed shortly after, with the first one awarded in 1867 by the Ohio College of Dental Surgery.

The reason for the two different degrees is rooted in the historical development of dental education. In the early days of dentistry, there was debate about whether dentistry should be considered a separate profession from medicine or a specialty within medicine.

Schools that viewed dentistry as a separate profession opted for the DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) degree. This degree emphasized the scientific and medical foundation of dentistry. Schools that viewed dentistry as a specialty within medicine chose the DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree. This degree focused on the surgical aspects of dentistry.

The Education and Training of DMD and DDS Graduates

Today, the education and training of DMD and DDS graduates are virtually identical. Both degrees require four years of post-graduate education following a bachelor's degree. The curriculum includes courses in anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and clinical dentistry. Both DMD and DDS graduates must pass national and state licensing exams to practice dentistry.

The Scope of Practice for DMD and DDS Graduates

There is no difference in the scope of practice for DMD and DDS graduates. Both are qualified to diagnose and treat oral health problems, perform a wide range of dental procedures, and prescribe medications. They can also specialize in areas such as orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, or oral surgery.

Choosing a Dentist

When choosing a dentist, it's important to consider your individual needs and preferences. Some factors to consider include:

•  Location: Choose a dentist that is conveniently located for you.
•  Experience: Ask about the dentist's experience and qualifications.
•  Insurance: Make sure the dentist accepts your dental insurance plan.
•  Personality: Choose a dentist that you feel comfortable with and who you can communicate with effectively.

Whether you choose a DMD or a DDS, you can be confident that you are receiving quality dental care from a qualified professional. Both degrees represent a high level of education and training in the field of dentistry.
