Foods to Avoid This Summer for a Healthier Smile

Posted on 7/30/2017 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
Avoid sugary foods this summer for better oral health.
Everyone wants a smile that is inviting and healthy looking. Nobody wants to run around hiding their mouth every time they laugh or smile. Sure, you know that to keep your smile looking its best, you should brush two times a day and floss in between. But did you ever consider what else can make that beautiful smile of yours get a little tarnished in between brushings? We'll bet you didn't. So here are some tips on how to keep that smile good in between brushings.

What Foods Should I Avoid?

The first food is really a drink and you probably already know that you shouldn’t drink it. Carbonated beverages are horrible for your teeth. They are high in acid which is one of the main causes of tooth decay. The other problem with sugary drinks is that you tend to sip them all day. This constantly introduces acid into your mouth which then sits on your teeth until the next time you brush them. No, rinsing your mouth after you drink a soda is not sufficient to negate the effects.

Candy and starchy foods stick to your teeth. This makes it difficult for your saliva, your mouth’s natural mouthwash, to wash them away. Instead, they stick to your teeth and increase the acid levels in your mouth leading to tooth decay.

Coffee, tea, and red wine will stain your teeth. They also will raise the acid level in your mouth if you drink them sweetened. Again, like with soda, if they are sipped over time they constantly raise the acid levels.

So if you can’t drink anything and you can’t eat fun foods what can you do? Well, if you want to keep your teeth looking white and in tip top shape what you should do is drink water. Water washes acid-producing foods from your mouth and it is good for you. If you have any questions, or if you would like to learn more, please call us today at (315) 800-5020.
