Bone loss in your jaw may not sound good, but it happens in a lot of mouths without people even realizing it at first. You may think that you are doing everything you can to prevent bone loss, but if you have even one missing tooth, then bone loss is already happening. It can also happen from untreated (or undiagnosed) gum disease. Make sure you go in and see your dentist every six months like you should. That way, they can keep track of your bone density and help the moment that bone loss is detected. Bone Loss in Your JawThe moment you have a tooth extracted, bone loss begins. People don't often realize how quickly it can happen. The only way to combat bone loss following an extraction is by having someone put another tooth option in its place for you to use. This includes things like partials and dental implants. Without those options being put in place, bone loss will begin, and keep going, until it encounters something that will stop it. Initially, the area beneath that lost tooth will begin to reabsorb. This means the body is removing what it feels is unnecessary bone. The problem is, it will also impact the bone beneath the surrounding teeth. The bone will go from strong and healthy to thin and weak, and can cause your jaw to become painful and even possibly break. This can also cause your remaining teeth to shift together, towards each other. This can screw up your bite alignment, how you chew, affect how you speak, and make it to where your teeth struggle with higher instances of gum disease and tooth decay. If you think you may have bone loss in your jaw, speak with your dentist right away. That way, they can help you keep an eye on it or treat it.
