Abscessed Tooth Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS NY 13215-2205If you don't have access to our dentist office during the weekend or while away on vacation and need to know ways of managing the pain of an abscessed tooth, here are some tips that can help while we get you set-up with a visit.

Apply Ice

If the discomfort is not caused by an exposed nerve, applying ice is a great way to manage the pain of an abscessed tooth. You can use an ice pack or fill a small plastic bag with some small ice chips and place by the cheek to relieve the pain.

Salt Water

A home remedy that has been used for centuries, salt water, can help with managing the pain in your tooth. Add half of a teaspoon of salt to half a cup of hot (not boiling) water, mix until the salt is dissolved.

You can use tap water for this. While the water is warm or room temperature, whatever is more comfortable, swish it around the mouth for a few seconds, spit and repeat until you use all the water. The best thing about this home remedy is that you can do it as often as needed and it's an excellent disinfectant.

Herbal Tea Bag
Tea contains tannins, which acts as an analgesic that can be helpful to reduce tooth pain. It can also reduce swelling. Place a wet tea bag on the affected area and leave for as several hours or overnight.

Anti-inflammatory Medications

Over-the-counter, anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen can also help in managing the pain of an abscessed tooth. Use as directed.

While these home remedies can help while you seek dental treatment, the infection from an abscessed tooth can spread to other parts of your body and needs to be treated as soon as possible.
