Managing the Pain of Oral Burns

Posted on 6/20/2018 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
Oral Burns Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS NY 13215-2205the pain of oral burns is like taking care of any other burn on your skin. There are several things you can do to minimize the discomfort that comes from biting into that piping hot pizza before it has cooled enough.

These are some of the things you can do as soon as an oral burn happens.

Ice or Ice Water

Putting something very cold in your mouth will help with the pain and the after effects of an oral burn. If you drink ice water or chew on some ice chips, you will find it relieves the discomfort immediately.

Make sure you swish the water around for a few minutes. Just be careful with the sharp edges from the ice cubes. You can also drink a cold smoothie or any other chilled drink.

Over-the-Counter Medications
Orajel and other similar over-the-counter medications that contain benzocaine serve as anesthetics and can help manage the pain of oral burns.

Avoid Salty, Crunchy Food

Managing the pain of oral burns is important so your mouth can heal without having to visit the dentist. Taking care of your mouth includes avoiding salty and crunchy foods, because the sharp edges of things like chips, can hurt the sore area.

Salt Water Gargles

While salt generally irritates an injury in the mouth, gargling with warm salt water can not only relieve the pain from oral burns, but it also serves as a disinfectant. You can do this by dissolving half a teaspoon of salt with a cup of hot water. Let it stand until it cools to room temperature. Swish it in your mouth until the water is gone. Repeat multiple times a day.

There are ways you can manage the pain of oral burns immediately after they happen. If it doesn't improve in about a week, please call the office so we can look at it.
