Changing Your Diet Can Improve Your Dental Health

Posted on 7/10/2018 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
Changing Your Diet Can Improve Your Dental HealthNutrition plays a bigger role in your dental health than you realize. At the same time, if you don't have at least 25 teeth in your mouth you can't eat very nutritiously.

All of this is important because while your eyes are a window to the soul, your teeth and gums are a window to your body.

How Nutrition Impacts Your Teeth

It starts when you're a child because your diet influences how your teeth develop. Once you're an adult and all your teeth are in place you'll need to eat a healthy diet to maintain good dental health. Failure to maintain a healthy diet puts us at risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease, and bone loss.

These issues can signal other problems such as cardiovascular disease, celiac disease, diabetes, sinus infection, rheumatoid arthritis, irritable bowel disease, gastroesophageal reflux, alcoholism, and more. Sometimes we can even diagnose you with these problems before your doctor does.

Food contains things your teeth need. For instance, probiotics help decrease gingivitis and plaque by suppressing the growth of bacteria in your mouth. Cranberries are another great food because they contain anthocyanins (also found in blueberries, red cabbage, eggplant, black rice, raspberries).

This prevents bacteria from attaching to your teeth. Of course, the opposite is also true in that there are also things your teeth don't need – such as a high amount of simple sugar as found in most processed food.

Besides eating well, you also need to schedule an appointment to have a routine cleaning conducted by our dentist. This will help to remove any plaque that's there. Your nutritious diet will help your teeth remain healthy from then until your next appointment with us. Give us a call today so we can help you establish this new, healthy routine in your life.
