The Role That Fluoride Plays in Your Oral Health

Fluoride is naturally present in ground water as well as in ocean water, and while you may hear negative feedback from certain groups regarding fluoride, we're here to tell you what positive effects it can have on your oral health.

Fluoride is Safe and Effective

Not only is fluoride available in your water, you can purchase toothpaste with added fluoride. But why? It's effective in preventing tooth decay. Studies have shown that children who live in areas without fluoridation can be three times more likely to end up needing dental surgery for decayed teeth. Check with your local public water supplier to find out if your water is fluoridated.

If it's not, be sure that you're purchasing toothpaste with added fluoride. It can save you time and money later.

While some may argue that fluoride is not safe, this is not true. For 70 years scientific evidence has consistently indicated that it is not only safe, but effective. The U.S. Surgeons General, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, The American Medical Association, the American Dental Association and the World Health Organization all endorse the use of fluoride. It is an effective way to prevent tooth decay.

How Does it Work?

Fluoride slows down the breakdown of enamel and it increases the rate of remineralization in the teeth. Teeth that are treated with fluoride are harder, resist acid and are larger than teeth that are untreated.

You can find other sources of fluoride, such as mouthwashes, toothpastes and you can even ask for a fluoride treatment in our office! In addition to regular visits to our office for cleanings, fluoride plays a key role in the overall health of your teeth.
