Causes of Pain Following a New Root Canal

Posted on 4/10/2019 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
Causes of Pain Following a New Root CanalIf you have just had a root canal, you were most likely in a lot of pain, because a root canal usually occurs after an infection. While you were in pain before the procedure, you may not have expected to be in pain after the procedure.

If you are in pain after a root canal procedure, there are signs you need to look for to make sure that the pain you are feeling is normal.

After a Root Canal

There is some amount of pain involved with a root canal procedure. This is because getting a root canal involves us making a small incision in your tooth to deep clean the inner chambers of the tooth. This is done to save a tooth and stop the pain you may have been in. But the cleaning of a root canal means that we may also have irritated nerves and gums surrounding the infected tooth, which causes the pain.

However, this pain should go away within a day or two after the procedure. We may give you medication to help with the pain for a few days, depending on the procedure's success. You may also be advised to take over the counter medications for pain relief.

If you are still in pain or your pain increases, you may need to come back to see us. While rare, it is possible that you have an additional problem with the tooth. If the pain increases, or you start running a fever, you may need to come back to our office for a checkup.

If you have questions about root canals, or you are concerned that you may need a root canal, why not give us a call? We would love to talk with you about root canals and other ways to improve your oral health.
