|We find that many of our patients have never heard of a tongue cleaner much less have used one to keep their tongue clean. Today we will look at the benefits of using a tongue cleaner and what types are available for you to purchase.
Believe it or not, just because you brushed your teeth does not necessarily mean that your mouth is now clean. Your tongue is a large surface in your mouth that not only retains microorganisms and oral debris, it can harbor bacteria and spread it back to your already clean teeth.
Many patients give the tongue a good brushing as they are brushing their teeth, and while this is better than not cleaning the tongue at all, it is not quite enough. Most tongue scrapers remove 30 percent more bacteria and debris than a normal tooth brush can.
A tongue cleaner, also called a tongue scraper or tongue brush is specifically designed to clean the coating on the upper surface of the tongue. While it is not a substitute for brushing your teeth, it is an excellent addition to your oral hygiene routine.
Beginning at the back of the tongue, gently press the scraper down onto the surface of the tongue and pull it forward. This removes the dead cells that build up on your tongue over time, as well as bacteria, plaque and food particles that may have managed to nestle their way in.
Removing bacteria from the mouth is important for preventing cavities, decay, periodontal disease and other conditions that can affect the mouth negatively.
If you have any questions about tongue scraping and the benefits for your oral health, please ask us about it at your next cleaning. We will be happy to demonstrate for you and talk about the benefits. We are looking forward to seeing you soon!
