|Everyone has their favorite beverage. For some it is coffee, for others it is tea. Some people do not drink either. They drink milk, smoothies, fruit juice, or water with or without additives of some kind. No matter what the beverage of your choice is, one thing is certain. Some of them stain your teeth.
Most people do not understand what it is about their beverage that stains their teeth, but since coffee and tea are the drinks most people associated with tooth-staining, they stay away from those. They also believe it is the fact that these beverages are dark-colored and that is what causes the staining. This is a fallacy. Even green tea or herbal teas can stain your teeth.
What Does Cause the Staining?
Liquids that stain your teeth contain a component called tannin. Yes, this is most associated with tea and usually dark-colored tea. This also leads most people to assume that if the liquid they are drinking is not dark-colored, then it won't cause their teeth to stain. In other words, it is a safe drink.
With this in mind, people may switch from a dark-colored tea to a light-colored tea or to an herbal tea. That this protects them from tannins is yet another myth and gives people a false sense of security. This is especially damaging to those who go through teeth whitening procedures because the tannins work against what they are trying to accomplish.
What Can I Drink?
One thing that you can always drink without worrying about staining your teeth is water. But since variety is the spice of life the better question to ask is how can I drink my favorite beverage without staining my teeth. The good news is, it can be done.
Two easy ways are to drink the beverage with a straw so it bypasses your teeth and if it is a hot beverage drink it using the to go coffee top. That will also help to bypass the teeth. One other way to reduce the effects is to sip your tea or coffee with water as a chaser. This washes the damaging chemical from your teeth. For more information or tips contact our office.
