|Oral cancer is a serious disease that affects over 50,000 new patients each year. Sadly, the five-year survival rate is only at about 57%, so diagnosing and treating the disease early is imperative.
While oral cancer doesn't always exhibit symptoms, especially those that you'll be able to see with the naked eye, if you spot any of these signs, please give our office a call right away.
Where Might You Notice Signs of Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer can form anywhere in your mouth, including the tongue, throat, gums, cheeks, lips, salivary glands, larynx, and pharynx. Oral cancer can even affect the sinuses. Since many of these locations are not something you'll be able to see on your own, this highlights the importance of regular dental checkups.
What Are the Common Signs of Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer presents differently for different people, but there are some symptoms that are more common than others. Swelling or thickening of the oral tissue, bumps, lumps, and rough spots are major signs, as is the development of red or white patches in the mouth.
If you notice a persistent sore in your mouth, you may also have the early signs of oral cancer. A long-term sore on the face, mouth, or neck, especially one that bleeds easily, should be a cause for a concern. If it fails to heal within two weeks, please give our office a call.
There are other signs that you can look for if you are concerned about oral cancer. Difficulty swallowing, chewing, speaking, or moving the tongue, or jaw may signal oral cancer, as can chronic sore throat, voice changes, and hoarseness.
If you are concerned about oral cancer and spot any of these symptoms, please give us a call right away. Early detection and treatment are essential for a favorable outcome.
