![]() Vitamin deficiencies affect the components of your oral cavity just as they would other parts of your body. Whether you are anorexic or bulimic you do not get the proper nutrition that you need. The vitamins and minerals that are lacking because of this have an impact on your teeth, gums, mouth tissue and jaw. In addition, vomiting, and purging also negatively affect your oral health. If you have an eating disorder, please let us know. We will be better able to correct problems if we know the cause. What Effect Does Eating Disorders Have?Their first effect is to make you vitamin deficient. In particular, you need calcium, iron, vitamin D and the B vitamins. Like your bones, your teeth need calcium to stay strong and to prevent tooth decay. But also like your bones, you need vitamin D to be able to absorb the calcium. You could end up with a mouth full of teeth that are decaying, will eventually crack and could possibly just fall out. If your teeth just fall out your gums are having a problem. Vitamin deficiency can affect those as well To keep your gums healthy you need calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B3 and iron. Without these vitamins and minerals, you could get canker sores, gingivitis, and chronic bad breath. Your gums could become red, swollen and glassy looking. You may also get dehydrated, which will cause your lips to dry out and crack. Finally, if you purge or vomit you will add more fuel to the fire. Purging and vomiting lead to a cascade of acid rolling over your teeth on a very frequent basis. This acid sits on your teeth, mixes with the mouth's natural bacteria and leads to tooth decay. The bigger problem is that more brushing and rinsing can aggravate the problem and make it worse. |
