How Can Someone Avoid the Negative Effects of Dental Anxiety?

Posted on 12/10/2019 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
How Can Someone Avoid the Negative Effects of Dental Anxiety? There are many fears out there that people have, going to the dentist is high up on the list. Between 9% and 20% of people in the United States say they avoid going to the dentist out of either anxiety or fear.

Dental phobia rates right up there with anxiety. If you are feeling panic about going to the dentist, becoming more aware of dental anxiety and the ways to cope with it can help protect your oral health.

What Causes Dental Phobia

There are a lot of reasons you could be afraid of coming to the dentist. Some of the most common that we hear are having the fear of the pain. Either from personal experience or from stories of others, it scares people. There have been a lot of advances in the technique used by our dentist as well as the advancements with the tools a dentist uses.

They are now designed to help you successfully get through the experience pain free. Some people have a fear of side effects from the anesthesia or a fear of the needles. There are now many different levels of sedation available if you have a fear of losing control or embarrassment. We can consult with you on the best way to approach your dental work.

How We Can Help You

If you are willing to set up an appointment, we can simply have a consultation to discuss with you the different options to help you comfortably get through your dental work. We have minimal sedation where you are awake but relaxed. Then we have what's called “Conscious Sedation.”

This is where you may slur your words a little bit and probably not remember much of what has happened during the procedure. Lastly, we have deep sedation, this where you are on the very edge of being awake but completely relaxed and we can still wake you up. If you want to sleep through the process, we can help by administrating some general anesthesia.

There are also many other ways we can help you prepare for a procedure. If you have some fears, give us a call. We are happy to hear them and discuss options to help.
