How a Diagnosis Is Made?

Cavities result from dental decay, and will only get larger if they are not treated. We detect cavities by performing a full examination of the teeth and mouth. We also ask you about tooth sensitivity and pain. Probing the teeth with certain instruments will also help us examine soft areas. By taking x-rays, we can check the extent of dental decay and cavities. To prevent future problems with decay, you need to schedule regular checkups and exams with our office. You should also brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day at home.

Treatment Options

The type of treatment option you use will depend on the extent of the decay and how the cavity is affecting your tooth or the adjacent teeth. If a cavity is small, we can treat it with fluoride. This can sometimes reverse cavities at the beginning stages. We can also use tooth-colored composites for fillings or insert a crown on a tooth that is weakened or has extensive decay. A crown may be made of gold, porcelain, or resin. Root canals may be indicated for a cavity or decay that reaches the pulp, or core of a tooth. This procedure can save your tooth from extraction. However, if a tooth is badly decayed, extraction may be the only solution.
