Caring for Original Teeth Plus Dental Implants

Posted on 7/7/2020 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
Caring for Original Teeth Plus Dental ImplantsIf you have replaced certain teeth with implants, but still have original teeth. Knowing how to care for both properly can be tricky without guidance. Today we are discussing how you can clean your original teeth and dental implants efficiently and effectively.

Use A Low Abrasive Toothpaste

Implants function similarly to natural teeth, but they need to be cleaned differently when it comes to toothpaste. You can clean both your original teeth and your implants by using toothpaste with the lowest abrasion rating possible. Abrasive ingredients such as baking soda help whiten natural teeth, but it only damages implants. Simply brush as you normally would with a soft-bristled toothbrush twice a day for 2 minutes at a time

Use Floss Made For Dental Implants

Floss that is made for dental implants is different from regular floss. The first thing you notice is the thick, fuzzy, almost brush-like middle section. This is designed for cleaning around the tooth itself. In addition to this, there's a thinner section at the end of the floss that is stiff and is designed to be inserted between the gumline and the implanted tooth and pulled through. You will want to use this special floss for your implanted teeth and regular floss for natural teeth.

Additionally, water flossers are an excellent option. These are tiny water jets designed to get between the same spaces implant floss gets. You can use this for both your teeth and implants- this is definitely more convenient if you just want to keep track of one flossing device!

Using A Slim Head Interdental Brush For Your Implants

We recommend using an Interdental brush if you have implants. These are small, thin brushes designed to get in between tight spaces- they are perfect for getting around and under an implant crown to get rid of hidden plaque/bacteria.
