Symptoms of Dental Abcess

A dental abscess is a collection of pus that accumulates on the inside of the teeth, the gums, or even in the bone that keeps your teeth in place. The abscess is usually a result of a bacterial infection and can cause a lot of pain.

There are multiple symptoms of a dental abscess that include the following:

•	redness and swelling in the face
•	throbbing pain in the affected area
•	intense pain in the tooth or gums when you lie down
•	red and swollen gums
•	unpleasant taste in the mouth
•	bad breath
•	loose teeth
•	discolored or tender teeth
•	tooth sensitivity when you consume something hot or cold

Possible Treatment for Dental Abscess

When home remedies for dental abscesses don't work, or the abscess becomes far too severe, it is essential for you to consult your doctor for treatment and prevention.

A dental abscess is normally treated by removing the infection from the source and draining away the pus. Some possible treatment options for dental abscesses include the following.

•	extraction of the infected tooth
•	root canal treatment
•	incision and drainage

Root canal treatment would help remove the abscess from the root, but if this option isn't possible, your dentist is likely to suggest extraction of the infected tooth. On the other hand, incision and drainage is a temporary solution in which the abscess is drained by making a small cut or incision in the gum.
All these treatment procedures require local anesthesia to numb the affected area in the mouth.
