Some People Get Migraines from Untreated Dental IssuesIt is common to experience a headache when you have a toothache and vice versa. A toothache may result from cavities, TMJ disorder, or tooth grinding, just to mention a few. If untreated, these dental issues can result in migraines usually felt on the forehead or behind the eyeball. Other migraine symptoms will include nausea, dizziness, and sensitivity to sound and light. Dental problems cause migraines given the trigeminal nerve's position that provides sensation to the face, lips, gums, and teeth.

TMJ Disorder

A TMJ disorder will affect the jaw joint in front of the ear and muscles surrounding it, causing toothache and headache. Migraine from TMJ usually starts from the ear towards the jaw. This pain worsens with jaw movement when you open your mouth to chew or speak. If you have a bad bite, either due to misaligned or missing teeth, your jaw muscles will also strain to keep your mouth closed or to swallow. This strain causes inflammation and hence migraine.

Tooth Grinding and Tooth Decay

Tooth grinding or bruxism, which usually happens at night, is caused by stress or misaligned teeth. Bruxism causes inflammation of the teeth and jaw muscles, making it difficult for you to open or close your mouth. The pain from bruxism is usually a dull headache that occurs around the eyes. You may also experience jaw clicking when you open or close your mouth due to this condition. If you have tooth decay, the pain may push to the head, causing a migraine. This is especially where the decay is on your back teeth.
