Can Adults Get Dental Sealants?

Posted on 2/8/2021 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
Can Adults Get Dental Sealants? If you are wondering if you can get dental sealants as an adult, the answer is yes, provided you have teeth that have not been filled, or you usually get a cavity, on average, at least once a year. Adults who do have a tendency toward dental decay can enjoy better future dental health by having sealants applied.

What Is a Sealant?

A sealant is a liquid barrier we apply to the chewing surfaces of premolars and molars. These chewing surfaces feature small grooves and fissures that easily trap food particles and bacteria. They also are more difficult to clean, as a result. A sealant can repel food or debris from collecting on the surfaces, which can lead to the development of decay. Sealants come in 2 forms – as a resin material that we apply and use a light to cure and harden or as a self-curing material. In either case, the sealant effectively keeps out food particles and bacteria that can lead to plaque and dental decay.

Are You Younger or Older?

If you are a younger adult, a sealant can be used as a preventative measure to prevent and stop decay. Adding a sealant to the chewing surfaces of your molars and premolars makes it easier for you to take care of your teeth and gums. It also makes it possible for you to save money on future dental work, such as fillings or root canals, so the time and money you invest in getting sealants can be well worth your while. Many of your teeth may already be worn or already have restorations or fillings if you are older. In this case, it is easier for us to provide fluoride treatments. Some of the chewing surfaces of older adults' teeth may already be too worn or smooth to accept a sealant.

Do you believe you could benefit from a sealant? This dental application costs about $30 to $50 per tooth. While some dental plans do not cover sealants, and you may have to pay out-of-pocket, they are still good investments if you want to avoid future dental repairs. Give us a call today to arrange an appointment for an exam and consultation.
