What Are the Pros and Cons to Floss vs Dental Picks?

Posted on 2/22/2021 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
What Are the Pros and Cons to Floss vs Dental Picks? Both dental picks and floss can be very useful ways of removing debris from between your teeth. Floss is flexible and easy to use for the majority of patients. It is safe and does not pose much risk of damaging your gums or teeth. However, some find that it is difficult to reach their rear teeth with floss, especially patients that do not have the best dexterity in their hands.

On the other hand, a dental pick can remove plaque as well as floss can. They can also be used to remove a set in tartar that has hardened on your teeth and can be a great maintenance tool between dental visits. The long handle makes it easy to clean those back, hard to reach teeth.

The only major downside to dental picks is that they present a risk of injury if misused. While they are made from a soft steel that is designed to protect your enamel, the pointed end can still irritate your gums. This concern makes it vital that you use the utmost caution when using a dental pick.

Which Option Is Best?

Dental picks and floss are both excellent oral care tools that can help you keep your smile looking great. However, each patient is different and will often prefer one option over the other. With that in mind, one of the best solutions is to have both tools on hand. At times, traditional floss will be the best care option for a particular situation. Other instances will call for the flexibility and gentleness of dental floss.

No matter which option you choose, it is important that you consult with trained professionals such as those employed by our team. You can contact our office for all of your dental care needs, as well as for advice on proper home care.
