4 Surprising Foods that Are Actually Good for Your TeethWe all know that healthy teeth and gums go beyond just brushing your teeth twice a day. You have to adopt various other oral hygiene habits, maintain a healthy lifestyle and most importantly, follow a healthy diet.

While you might have thought this diet primarily consists of fruits and vegetables, there are other foods too that can benefit your teeth. Here are four surprising foods that are actually good for your teeth.

Chewing Gum

While it's debatable whether chewing gum even counts as a food, there's no doubt that it holds numerous benefits for the teeth. It helps promote the production of saliva, which keeps bacteria at bay. It helps get rid of any bad breath after eating. It helps dislodge any food particles stuck in the teeth. All this leads to healthy and stronger teeth.

Dark Chocolate

This is definitely a surprising one since we've all probably heard how bad chocolates are for our teeth. However, dark chocolate can actually be beneficial for the teeth. It contains less sugar than normal chocolates. Additionally, it contains components such as cocoa bean husk and other nutrients that are actually effective at fighting plaque and preventing tooth decay.

Cheese

Cheese is another food that doesn't come to mind when you think of healthy items. However, in certain situations, cheese can be quite beneficial for the teeth as well. Normally, when you consume a lot of sodas or other foods, they tend to leave behind a lot of acids on your teeth which causes enamel erosion. Eating cheese immediately after that helps neutralize some of those acids, thereby protecting your teeth.

Tea

While tea isn't exactly dangerous for your teeth, it can cause a lot of staining and discoloration which can appear unsightly. However, besides that, tea does carry some benefits as well. Green tea, in particular, contains many antioxidants and polyphenols that fight bacteria in the mouth and encourage healthy teeth and gums.

If you think a certain food isn't suiting your teeth, you can always reach out to Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS at Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS for consultation.
