4 Best Treatments for Bleeding Gums

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
4 Best Treatments for Bleeding GumsGums are the foundation for our teeth. The gum tissues provide support and nutrients to our teeth. Unhealthy or bleeding gums can lead to other oral infections and diseases. Therefore, it is important that we treat our bleeding gums immediately.

The 4 best treatments for bleeding gums are as follows:

Use a Soft Toothbrush

Using a broad toothbrush with hard bristles can cause injury to the gums and other areas of your mouth. This causes your gums to bleed. Dentists advise that adults too should use toothbrushes with soft bristles. It is also important that you brush gently. Brushing vigorously can erode enamel and make your gums bleed. Brush your teeth gently, with a soft toothbrush for 2 minutes, twice a day to treat your bleeding gums

Use a Fluoride Toothpaste

Plaque formation on the gum line can cause bleeding of the gums. To reduce plaque build-up, use a fluoride-based toothpaste that has 1,350 to 1,500ppm of fluoride in it. Fluoride is one of the essential minerals needed to keep the teeth and gums healthy.

You can also use a fluoride mouthwash to keep your mouth clean and fresh. As long as your mouth is free from bacteria and food residue, your gums will remain healthy.

Salt Water Mouth Rinse

Dentists recommend using hydrogen peroxide with water to rinse your mouth after meals and brushing. But in case you are unable to get your hands on hydrogen peroxide, a home remedy like a salt-water mouth rinse is just as effective. Mix half a teaspoon of salt in one cup of lukewarm water and rinse your mouth with it. The salt and warm water solution washes away the disease-causing bacteria and heals the wounds in your gums.

Consume More Vitamin C

Did you know that in the 18th century, sailors were given lemons to suck as a cure for scurvy? The deficiency of vitamin C can cause the bleeding of gums. Try to increase the intake of vitamin C in your diet in order to stop your gums from bleeding. Eat more citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, and limes to treat bleeding gums.
