Hitting Your Teeth During a Fall Could Leave Your Teeth Reeling for Years

Hitting Your Teeth During a Fall Could Leave Your Teeth Reeling for YearsFacial trauma can result from an accident, injury, or a fall. If you hit your teeth during a fall, your jaw, which offers support to your teeth, could also get impacted. This is why you should seek immediate treatment, as the injury could be on the unseen parts of your mouth and, if untreated, may leave your teeth reeling for years.

Injuries That Could Leave Your Teeth Reeling for Years

If you hit your teeth, it may either loosen in its socket, also called a subluxation injury, or maybe pushed deeper into the socket, intrusion injury. Intrusion injuries are especially common with baby teeth, given that the alveolar bones that hold their teeth are not as strong as that of an adult. These injuries can also happen to athletes and require longer recovery periods. In other cases, your tooth may partially come out of its socket. Your tooth may also remain attached to the alveolar bone but move around due to the bone fracture.

What We Will Do If You Visit Us with An Injured Tooth

A tooth injury treatment will vary depending on the type of fracture and the injured part of the tooth. We will start by examining your teeth physically then conduct an X-ray to check the intensity of the damage. If the injury is on your enamel or the visible parts of your teeth, we will administer restorative treatments such as fillings and crowns. We will then do tooth repositioning or splinting for intrusion and root injuries and administer antibiotics to prevent infection. If the bone damage is severe, we may recommend surgical procedures after repositioning. Finally, since injuries on your teeth can be fatal, it is important to protect your mouth using mouthguards and helmets before engaging in activities that can result in injury or fall.
