Can You Literally Brush Away Your Enamel?

Posted on 6/21/2021 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
Can You Literally Brush Away Your Enamel? The outer layer of your teeth is made up of a substance called enamel. This substance is incredibly hard and durable. However, enamel can still be damaged by the acid created by some of the bacteria in your mouth. This is what leads to cavities. Unfortunately, you can also damage the enamel of your teeth if you do not brush correctly. If you practice these bad brushing habits, you can literally brush the enamel right off of your teeth, leaving them unprotected.

Brushing Too Hard Does Not Clean Your Teeth Better

If you brush using too much pressure or are too aggressive with your brushing, you do not actually get more plaque off of your teeth. Instead, you run the risk of damaging the enamel. You do not need to exert much pressure at all when you brush, nor do you need to vigorously move the toothbrush back and forth. Instead, use a steady yet gentle pressure. The most important part is that the bristles run across every part of your teeth, not that they move quickly or push down onto the tooth.

Do Not Over-Brush

If you brush your teeth in the morning and at night, you are brushing enough. Some people do like to brush after the eat lunch, too, which is fine as long as you wait thirty minutes after eating. Some foods, especially those that are acidic or contain a good amount of sugar, will weaken the enamel on your teeth when they come into contact with it. You need to wait about 30 minutes for the enamel to harden again before you brush. If you do not, it does not matter how gentle you are with your brushing—you will still damage the enamel.

If you notice that your teeth have become sensitive or that your gums have receded, it could be because you have damaged them from over-brushing. Give us a call to make an appointment so we can check over your oral health and talk to you about good brushing habits.
