Many people reach for a bottle of mouthwash to fight bad breath. It is true, the mouthwash kills the bacteria in your mouth, which is the source of the unpleasant odor. However, mouthwash with alcohol in it can also make things worse. Most mouthwashes on the market today contain a small amount of alcohol, which can put you at risk for oral health problems. Alcohol-based mouthwash does kill the odor-causing bacteria, but it can also damage the gum tissue in your mouth.

What Happens to Gum Tissue When Exposed to Alcohol in Mouthwash?

Using a mouthwash that contains alcohol can possibly put you at a greater risk for drying out your mouth, and worse, developing bigger problems. For instance, using mouthwash containing alcohol can damage and even kill the gum tissue in your mouth. Some report that mouthwash with alcohol in it can also increase your chances of oral cancer.
