Have You Ever Heard of Salivary Gland Stones?

Posted on 8/9/2021 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
Have You Ever Heard of Salivary Gland Stones? You may have heard of The Rolling Stones and Stonewall Jackson, but have you ever heard of salivary gland stones?

Your salivary glands are found in your mouth. You have hundreds of small salivary glands and a few large salivary glands. The salivary glands produce saliva. This clear liquid protects your teeth, helps with chewing and swallowing food, and starts the process of digestion. If you just start thinking about your favorite dessert, chances are you can stimulate your salivary glands right now.

Symptoms of Salivary Stones

Salivary stones can appear and disappear on their own. They vary in size but are characteristically hard and white. If you have a sore or painful lump under your tongue, you may have a salivary stone. Similarly, if you have pain or swelling behind your jaw or ears, give us a call as you may have a blocked salivary gland. If your salivary gland becomes infected, you may have a fever and the formation of pus around the salivary stone.

Risk Factors For Salivary Stones

If you have had radiation therapy on your head or neck or have had mouth surgeries in the past, you are at higher risk for salivary stones. Also, if you are a male advancing in age with kidney problems, be aware that you may develop salivary stones. Do not be alarmed, though; salivary stones are rarely serious, and we are a phone call away to help you.
