All You Need to Know About Gum Disease

Posted on 11/8/2021 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
All You Need to Know About Gum DiseasePeriodontal inflammation, also known as gum disease, is an infection of the tissues that surround and support the teeth. It is one of the most common reasons for tooth loss. It is painless at early stages, so patients often do not notice it until it worsens. Plaque, a sticky material of bacteria that develops on the teeth on a regular basis, is usually the culprit for gum disease.

Gum Disease Warning Signs

Although there is no pain associated with gum disease, there are a variety of symptoms that may indicate if a patient suffers from it. Gums that bleed easily or that are swollen, poor breath, gum recession and loosening of adult teeth are common symptoms that may develop over time. Discomforts on the chewing and biting motions should also be an alert to go visit our office for an evaluation.

There are plenty of factors that can raise your chances of getting this condition. Some of these are poor dental hygiene, smoking or chewing tobacco, heredity, crooked teeth that are difficult to clean, pregnancy, diabetes, and medicines that are calcium channel blockers, such as steroids or other antibiotics.

How to Prevent Gum Disease?

It is critical to maintain healthy and daily dental hygiene practices to minimize the onset of gingivitis, swelling, and bleeding of the gums, as well as the development of periodontal disease. Regular professional cleanings at our office are also necessary to keep plaque at bay, as it is difficult to remove by just brushing our teeth.

We recommend brushing your teeth two or three times a day, using dental floss and mouth rinses on a regular basis, as well as visiting our office at least twice a year to evaluate your current situation. Gum disease is easier to treat the earlier we start to do it, so if you or someone you know experience any of the symptoms mentioned above, please contact us today.
