Should Adults Get Dental Sealants?

Posted on 1/10/2022 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
Should Adults Get Dental Sealants?Dental sealants are preventative measures used to ward off cavities. A dental sealant is a thin plastic coating applied by a dentist to the chewing surface of your teeth. It is common for kids to get dental sealants to their back teeth between the ages of 6 to 14 years old. These years fall into the range in which kids are most likely to get cavities. However, kids are not the only ones who are prone to cavities.

Adults and Dental Sealants

It is appropriate for adults to receive dental sealants as well. If the adult does not have a cavity in their molar teeth, those teeth should be eligible for dental sealants. This dental treatment is especially advantageous for people who have deep pits and grooves on the surface of their molars.

Sealants can last up to 10 years, and we can replace dental sealants at any time. You may want to check with your insurance to see if they cover dental sealants.

Call us For Your Next Appointment

Give us a call for your next dental cleaning and exam. If we have not seen you for six months or more, it is time to have your teeth cleaned and checked. At that point, we can tell you if you have dental sealants still on your teeth or if you may be eligible for dental sealants.

We suggest taking proactive and preventative measures to keep your teeth clean and healthy. Make sure you brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes during each time. In addition, floss your teeth daily. Keeping your six-month appointments in our office every six months is also preventative. Lastly, we suggest you consider dental sealants as a preventative measure against tooth decay, regardless if you are a child or an adult.
