Causes of Bleeding Gums

Posted on 7/4/2022 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
Causes of Bleeding GumsBleeding gums are no common occurrence for anyone and should be taken with care to avoid extreme dental complications. If you notice bleeding gums after brushing or flossing your teeth, here are the potential causes.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the initial stage of periodontitis and is characterized by swollen, tender, bleeding gums. Failure to observe proper dental care by brushing away food particles in the mouth results in the build-up of a sticky film called plaque. When the plaque is left unattended, it sticks to the gum line infecting the gums. While medical procedures at our offices can reverse the condition at this stage, many people ignore our call to visit our dentists.

Severe gingivitis leads to a more critical condition, a periodontal disease that often affects other body parts such as the brain and the liver when left untreated. Therefore, bleeding gums may signify gingivitis infection in your mouth.

Pregnancy

Experts claim that women in their pregnancy status are prone to swollen and tender gums, which bleed during flossing and brushing. Pregnancy is associated with extreme hormonal changes in a women's body hence altering its response to bacterial infections and other possible complications. Ensure you make a regular visit to our dentist when pregnant for further examinations of your dental conditions as well as your overall health.

Rough Brushing

Our dentists advise on choosing the right toothbrush for your dental care. However, many people fail and end up vigorously brushing their teeth to clean their teeth and tongue thoroughly. Consequently, hard brushing leads to gum recession and bleeding due to the force applied to the soft tissues. We advise picking a soft bristle to enhance the proper cleaning of your teeth. If you experience chronic or severe bleeding gums, visit our offices for examinations and medical treatments. Contact us today to book an appointment.
