What Happens if Tooth Decay is Not Treated?

Posted on 8/22/2022 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
What Happens if Tooth Decay is Not Treated?Tooth decay is a condition caused by a bacterial attack on your teeth. When bacteria attack your teeth, cavities start to develop. In the initial stages, the cavities are small and may not look like something serious. However, if action is not taken to stop the cavities from growing, full-blown tooth decay can occur. Such tooth decay issues should be treated as soon as detected. Failure to treat visible tooth decay can lead to further complications. Among the potential dangers that may occur due to failure to treat tooth decay are:

Tooth Decay can Advance to Abscess

An abscess is a painful condition caused by an infection that leads to a collection of pus within tissues. In your mouth, you may experience abscesses if tooth decay is not treated. The infection causing the decay may spread to your gums and cause swelling and the formation of pus. This usually develops into a worse situation if not treated. To avoid this happening, start dealing with tooth decay as soon as you spot the earliest signs.

Tooth Decay can Destroy the Rooth Canal

Tooth decay starts on the outside and is usually painless. However, failure to take action can lead o the destruction of the entire tooth. If you do not treat the condition early enough, the tooth may get destroyed to the root. This will result in unbearable pain. Destruction of the inside pulp of your tooth also means that the infection can easily spread to the jaw and other teeth.

Necessary Tooth Removal

The most important factor you should consider when thinking about tooth decay is the possibility of losing your tooth entirely. If you do not treat the condition early enough, you may have to pay a heavy price for removing the entire tooth. Thankfully, there are plenty of options in regards to early treatment.
