What Are Cold Sores?

Posted on 9/19/2022 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
What Are Cold Sores? An elevated, small, unpleasant region known as a cold sore is covered in teeny, fluid-filled blisters. They typically happen where the skin of the immediate vicinity and the lip contact area. The blisters itch and finally develop a golden crust that slowly vanishes over the course of a few days. However, in addition to the lips, the outside of the mouth, and the nostrils can also develop cold sores. Cold sores can come back and often last for days. For most people, they usually only happen once or twice a year.

Causes Of A Cold Sore

Cold sores are brought on by the "Herpes Simplex virus," which is a virus. This virus can cause fever and oral ulcers and typically initially appears in infancy or early adulthood. Those who later get this basic infection make up one-third of those who eventually suffer from cold sores. However, many people who had cold sores do not get this serious condition. When a person is exhausted or suffering from another ailment, such as the flu or a cold, cold sores frequently appear. Sunlight and ultraviolet light can commonly cause a cold sore attack. Sometimes women find that having cold sores coincides with specific phases of their menstrual cycle.

Effects on Oral Health

Since cold sores are contagious, kissing or other close contacts can spread the virus. The most contagious stage of a cold sore is while it is blistering. As a result, you run the risk of spreading the infection to other people's hands and, very rarely, your own eyes. It is essential to make an effort not to touch cold sores. If the cold sore is squeezed, pinched, or punctured, the infection could spread around the mouth. Call us to make an appointment with a dentist from our team.
