Steps Involved In Root Canal

Posted on 11/7/2022 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
Steps Involved In Root CanalNo one would love to live with a missing tooth. A missing tooth can affect your smile and the proper function of your mouth. Luckily, tooth extraction is not the only way to deal with a decayed or infected tooth. Root canal treatment will help you save your natural teeth. This treatment involves removing the infected tissues to relieve pain and prevent infection from progressing. Knowing the steps involved in the root canal will help you understand what to expect.

Diagnosing the Infected Tissue

A dentist may often suggest root canal treatment if the pulp is infected. Patients with infected pulp usually visit a dentist for sensitivity or tooth pain. The good thing about consulting a professional is that they do not treat the symptoms. Instead, they focus on the root cause of the problem. With this, the dentist starts by diagnosing the infected teeth. X-rays may be performed to view the extent of the damage and determine whether root canal treatment is needed.

Removing the Infected Pulp

The dentist performs a root canal under local anesthesia. Thus, you will not feel any pain during the procedure. The dentist will then clean the root canal by removing the infected pulp and applying medication to ensure no infection is left. The chamber that accommodated the infected pulp will then be filled with a new root filler. A temporary dental filling is then used to seal the treated area to prevent bacteria and saliva from entering.

Restoration

In many cases, the dentist may use a crown to restore your bite and smile. The crowns are custom-made. Thus, they may take 2-3 weeks to get ready. The temporary filling will need to be removed, and a permanent crown will be placed. When you experience any dental issues, do not hesitate to contact us. Our professional will determine whether a root canal is a good option for you.
