How Does It Feel Eating With Dentures?

Posted on 12/5/2022 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
How Does It Feel Eating With Dentures?Dentures are a great alternative for replacing missing teeth. After several appointments, you will be proud to have your dentures. You'll enhance your smile, and your overall face will look good. However, you may feel uncomfortable as you get used to them. Eating with dentures is different from eating with your natural teeth. For instance, when adjusting to eating with dentures, you may have trouble sensing the flavors and taste of the food. Fortunately, some tips can help you manage your dentures successfully.

Start With Soft Foods

When you wear the dentures, your gums will start adapting to them. During this period, you will need to have a soft diet since eating anything crunchy can place stress on the gum tissues. This can increase the risk of gum inflammation or irritation of the gums. You can consider foods such as fish, eggs, puddings, and cooked vegetables. Remember to chop or slice the vegetables into tiny pieces to make them easy to chew.

Check the Food's Temperature

The dentures have an insulating effect. Hence, you may not be able to tell the temperatures of your food when you put it in your mouth. As you know, hot food can damage your mouth. It is, therefore, necessary to test the food's temperature on your lips.

Chew On Both Sides

Now you know what to eat and what to avoid as a new wearer of dentures. So, what next? You need to learn how to chew food. With natural teeth, most people chew on one side of their mouth. However, this can be problematic for denture wearers. The dentures will likely slip out of place when you chew on one side. In this case, it is best to distribute the food evenly to allow you to chew on both sides. This will also make your dentures more stable.

Although eating with dentures is not as comfortable as eating with your natural teeth, they are a good option. Our professionals will help you get dentures that fit perfectly in your mouth.
