Gum disease is a major problem for your oral and overall health, and the severe form of periodontitis is especially dangerous. Left untreated, this form of gum disease can result in tooth loss, so dental researchers are attempting to find new methods to treat this issue. Bioceramics is one of the most promising techniques that have been developed in recent years. What Are Bioceramics?Bioceramics refers to materials made out of biocompatible ceramics, and they can be used for both dental and biomedical use. The research for these materials began in the 1970s, and in the past 40 years, the use of the ceramics has greatly expanded. When it comes to gum disease, bioceramics involving silicon nitride are currently being developed to serve as a possible treatment option. These materials are used in spinal implants, and the surface has a deadly effect on the bacteria that is usually present with advanced gum disease. By better understanding how this works, dentists could use these materials in order to treat or even prevent periodontitis. Recent Research Regarding BioceramicsAccording to new research, about 50% of adults in the U.S. have some form of gum disease that is caused by bacteria that infect the gums that surround the teeth, which causes inflammation. They then examined how ceramic materials can change the metabolism of specific bacteria responsible for gum disease. It was found that the chemical reactions cause the bacteria's acids to break down and reduce the amounts of certain fats and proteins. Further studies are needed in the future, but so far, the results of this research has shown that bioceramics do show some promise as a therapeutic aid for the treatment of severe gum disease. While this treatment method might not be available for a while, there are still other treatment options available. Contact our office today if you are suffering from gum disease. |
