Dental Examinations
Syracuse, NY

The American Dental Association recommends an annual dental examination. Having them consistently, through the same dentist, helps us see changes in tooth movement, bone density, and levels of decay. Additionally, we look for signs of dental health issues and predict potential problems. At Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS, examinations are often completed with your regularly scheduled dental cleaning appointment; they are quick and painless.

What to Expect During Your Dental Exam

Dental exams are done most often following your dental cleaning and will include:
•  Review of Digital X-rays: Digital x-rays are a highly valuable dental tool. They allow us to see portions of the mouth that can’
•  t be seen with the naked eye. We can see areas of infection and decay below the gumline, assess bone health and spot growths. Returning to the same office allows us to compare x-ray images from previous examinations, this can help us see changes which can point to possible dental health issues.
•  Visual Exam: A significant portion of your dental exam is done simply through visual inspection. With a probe in hand, we will look at all areas of the oral cavity including inside the mouth and the lips, cheeks, neck, and jawbone. We will be looking for indications of lumps or bumps, while also looking for color or texture changes in tissue.
•  Oral Cancer Screening: The term cancer is never pleasant, but looking for potential symptoms is crucial. There are certain hazards that can increase your odds of developing oral cancer, such as smoking cigarettes or marijuana, but there are also environmental and genetic factors that can make you vulnerable. Statistics show that dentists spot the signs of oral cancer more often than any other medical professional. Oral cancer screenings are done quickly and painlessly.
•  Dental Education: Finally, we will discuss various dental education information, providing tips and possibly reviewing tools that can be valuable to increasing your oral health. We can review brushing and flossing techniques, discuss available preventive measures such as sealants and fluoride. We can also review various restorative or cosmetic procedures to increase your oral health or improve the look of your smile.

Daily Dental Hygiene

To significantly improve your oral health and what we find during your dental exam, you want to establish a strong daily dental hygiene plan. Taking less than five minutes each morning and evening, along with being educated on the foods and drinks we consume and how they affect your body, can make a huge impact on your teeth. We can provide you with the information you need to keep your teeth healthy throughout your life. Healthy teeth begin with daily brushing and flossing. We want you to remove harmful bacteria each day. Besides brushing, we will advise you to reduce the intake of sugar, sugar is found in so much of the foods and drinks that we consume. From sweets to bread and pasta, sugar is a sneaky ingredient. Dental education and putting a routine in place will help you have and maintain a healthy mouth.
