Digital versus Traditional Film

The old standard dental film x-ray was a challenge. After completing the x-ray, there was a processing time, and the completed image was a tiny slide that was difficult to see due to its size and graininess. Patients had to take the dentist’s word for what the problem was, and sometimes even refused service because they did not understand. Once the appointment was completed, the tiny images were kept in a personalized folder where it was common to lose them and difficult to send off for a second opinion. Digital has changed all of that.

Digital x-rays offer our patients so much more, including:
•  Fast, Instant Images: The digital format means that there is no film processing. We can take the images and have them instantly appear on a screen near your chair. With instant results, that means if we missed the spot we wanted to see, we would know right away.
•  High Resolution Images: Digital images are taken at a much higher resolution. No tinier grainy x-rays, we can show the patient large images that we can zoom in and out of to help them see and understand what we are looking at.
•  Digital Format: Having images in digital form is significant. It means that we can digitally save your images, they will never be lost, we can compare new images to previous images, and should you need a second opinion, we can easily email them to the office with the click of a button.
•  Reduced Radiation: X-rays take radiation to capture. Traditional x-rays used a level of radiation that was deemed safe by the American Dental Association, but it still made many patients uncomfortable. Digital x-rays use significantly less, around 70% less. We can capture digital x-rays with much less radiation exposure, meaning our more sensitive patients can sigh relief.

3D Digital X-Rays

A tool that we use for surgical planning is known as 3D Cone Beam Imaging. It helps us see the structure of the oral cavity from all angles through digital x-ray imaging. We use this technology when exploring and planning surgical procedures including the placement of dental implants. Dental implants are a metal rod that we surgically secured to the jawbone; the procedure is simple, the important work is in the planning. Using 3D Cone Beam imaging, we precisely map the placement of your surgical site, noting the bulk of the bone, and placement of nerves and more. Creating this map will guide us in your treatment.
